Chromium (Cr)  is a silvery-white, hard transition metal with very high corrosion and wear resistance. It forms a stable oxide layer on the surface, which effectively protects the metal from further oxidation. Pure chromium is rarely used; its most important technical application is as an alloying element in steels, especially stainless steels, where it significantly improves strength, hardness, and corrosion resistance. Chromium is also used in electroplating, pigments, and high-temperature materials.
